TMP451-Q1: Drop in replacement and software compatibility with TMP411-Q1

Part Number: TMP451-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP411, TMP451

We have designs using the TMP411A.  We are making a new HW revision of our systems, but don't want to update the portion of the software that uses the 411. Are the TMP451 and TMP411 drop in replacement compatible on a software level? It looks like the register map is very similar, and the I2C address of the 411A overlaps with the 451A, but I want to check that nothing else has changed.

Regards,

Jackson

  • Jackson,

Yes, generally you can consider the TMP451 and TMP411 compatible on a software level. This depends on how you are using the device, but as you mentioned, most of the register map is similar.

    Thanks,

  • Thanks Jalen,

Looking more closely, we use the following registers that are different between the two devices, so they might not be compatible without modification.

    0x18 – Write N-factor correction (0x23 on TMP451)

0x1A – Write resolution (not available on TMP451)

However, register 0x18 and 0x1A are not documented on the TMP451 register map.  Are these still available on the TMP451? What would happen if you write to register 0x18 or 0x1A even thought they are not listed?

    Thanks,

    Jackson

  • Jackson,

The measurement resolution for both the local and the remote channels on the TMP451 is fixed at 0.0625°C.

Writing to registers not documented on the TMP451 register map will not affect the functionality of the device.
