LDC1612: LDC1612 - Power Consumption Calculation

Part Number: LDC1612
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC2114

We want to know the power consumption of LDC1612 to evaluate if it is suitable.

We has two CR2032 batteries, and the power of each CR2032 is only 230mAh.

If the LDC1612 is turned on every 1 second to read the inductance value, then the LDC1612 will be turned off after reading.

Please help to see how much current will be consumed (less than 3V)

How long does it take to open each time? (Ms)

How much current does it consume on average?

BR,

Gary

  • Hi Gary,

The current consumption will depend on the coil connected to the LDC1612. For 1sps, ballpark average current consumption would be ~200uA. This assumes that the LDC1612's shutdown pin is duty cycled. Changes in the coil design could increase or decrease the current consumption by ~30uA. I suggest using our LDC Tools Excel calculator if you need more exact numbers. Use the Spiral Inductor Designer to design a rough coil given the space available, then use the LDC131x-LDC161x_Config tab to calculate the duty-cycled current consumption (scroll down toward the bottom of the sheet). Make sure that the "Use settings from Spiral Inductor Designer" box at the top of the page is checked; this is necessary in order for the current consumption to take the custom coil design into account.

This app note has more details about duty-cycling the device and how that affects both the average current and the response time. Using SD mode clears the register settings, so they need to be rewritten over I2C before triggering measurements. Sleep mode is slightly higher power consumption, but saves the register settings. For 1sps, wake-up time shouldn't be an issue. Wake-up time from SD mode is maximum 2ms, plus I2C configuration time and the user configurable conversion time (anywhere from 3.2us to 26.2ms). Wake-up time from sleep mode would only need one I2C transaction and the conversion time.

What is the application? We also have the LDC2114, which is much lower power (single uA) and is targeted for HMI applications.

    Best Regards,
