TMP112: NIST Traceability

Part Number: TMP112

I am looking for more information about the NIST traceability of the TMP112.

I understand that certificates for individual sensors are not available, but need more specifics on the traceability than what comes in the TI NIST Temp Sensor package I have received.

Do you have an uncertainty budget available for the testing of the sensors?

What documents can you provide to back up the statement in TI's "The Engineer's Guide to Temperature Sensing" that "digital temperature sensors ... do not require any additional system linearization or calibration to achieve traceable system accuracy."?

  • Dear Dana -

in the FAQ document you downloaded, you can reference #5 for the uncertainty question.

For traceable system accuracy, the temp sensor is only part of that, and these sensors are (as mentioned in the letter you downloaded) verified with equipment that is calibrated by an accredited lab that complies with ISO/IEC 17025 policies and procedures. Each device is tested and trimmed to conform to its respective datasheet specification limits.

The TMP112 specifically has datasheet limits listed with and without additional "in-system" calibration. (which in this case would be in the math applied after the measurement is taken) and the exact value of which would depend on your placement and layout vs. your design goals as measured once completed and being also tested (at your level, the system level) with a ISO/IEC 17025 calibrated lab reference, to maintain the unbroken chain of standards references that is the intent of having NIST on an entire system, if that is your intent or goal.

  • I think we're having a miscommunication. You pointed me to #5 in the FAQ which is about, "Does TI provide unique traceability certificates for each device?" and I am not looking for information about each individual device (per my earlier inquiry comment). I'm more interested in what (if any) additional information you can give to a customer (me) about your overall testing process and how it accounts for different kinds of uncertainty. Reading the linked issue here, it seemed like there could be potential for some further offline discussion on the topic.

  • Dear Dana -

Our datasheet states the typical and maximum values. The datasheet is the warranty we provide, there is no extra guard-band or tolerance. (that we don't mention)
