[FAQ] Which devices are best suited for ambient temperature sensing?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP112, TMP116, LMT01, TMP235, TMP61, TMP63, TMP64

What should I consider when choosing a sensor to measure ambient temperature?

  • When designing a system for ambient temperature sensing, it is important to consider layout. The sensor must be isolated from other heat-producing components. Please refer to Ambient Temperature Monitoring for reference designs and recommended devices.
While all TI devices can be used for ambient temperature sensing, here are some devices to consider:
    • TMP112
      • High accuracy digital temperature sensor
      • Zero calibration required
      • Low power makes it suitable for battery-powered operations
    • TMP116
      • High accuracy, zero calibration digital temperature sensor
      • Suitable RTD replacement
      • Compatible with I2C and SMBus interface

    • LMT01
      • 2-pin digital output temperature sensor
      • Can be converted into two-wire temperature probe (wire length up to 2 meters)

    • TMP235
      • High accuracy analog output temperature sensor
      • Low power consumption
      • Positive slope output of 10 mV/°C from -10°C to 125°C

    • TMP61, TMP63 or TMP64
      • Silicon-based thermistor with a positive temperature coefficient
      • Fast thermal response time
      • Highly linear; removes need for any linearization circuitry
      • Minimal calibration required
