MMWAVE-STUDIO: 0 for No. of Devices Detected // how to fix?

Part Number: MMWAVE-STUDIO
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1642, AWR1843, AWR1642BOOST

Hi,

Below is a screenshot of my Connection Tab in the mmwave studio application. I have not been able to connect either my AWR1642 or AWR1843. The log is also below. It looks like it is successful? But it does not recognize any device. I made sure the COM Port is set up to be the UART port as well.

What are some steps to fix this? I looked in the user guide and there is not much about fixing this issue besides a caution statement about making sure there is 1 device detected and to click the refresh button until it is. I clicked the button a lot and nothing happened.

Thank you!

  • Hello George,

Is this the first time you're using the boards with mmWave studio?

Did you check the COM ports in the device manager? Are they all recognized as depicted in the Snapshot below (Ignore the highlighted part). In total, there should be 4 AR-DevPack Ports (i.e. FTDI ports) and 2 XDS110 UART.

In addition to this, could you also check if the power supplies (5V) to both the boards is proper with sufficient current rating and the connections are tight.

    Regards,

    Ishita

  • Hi,

Yes this is my first time using both the AWR1642 and AWR1843 on the mmwave studio.

Below is the screenshot of my Ports:

I have never been able to get the 4 AR-DevPack Ports to appear. Is that the issue? The two USB serial ports appear and disappear when I plug in and out the DCA 1000 USB

FYI, I only have the AWR1642BOOST as well as the DCA1000. Is there any other hardware I need? What is the DevPack Hardware? Is that necessary?

Also, the power supply is tight on the board and they are the normal ones that I ordered from TI and got with my EVM boards.

    Thanks!

    George

  • Hello George,

No, DevPack is not needed in your case. The AWR + DCA1000 EVM are sufficient.

As you're connecting the boards for the first time, windows maybe not be able to recognize the device. You would need to update the FTDI drivers for this purpose. Section 2.3 of the mmWave_studio_user_guide.pdf explains the procedure to update the drivers.

But even if the ports are not recognized, there should be 4 ports that appear/disappear when you connect/disconnect the DCA1000 EVM. Please make sure you have connected the USB to the correct port on the DCA1000 i.e the FTDI port.

Also, this query has been resolved by our experts various times in the past. I request you to please go over those threads. You can use your search engine to look for some similar threads as follows:

search for "site e2e.ti.com DCA1000 ports not recognized"

Below are some threads produced by the same method:

Please try some workaround methods suggested in the resolved threads and let us know if it doesn't work.

    Ishita

  • Hi Ishita,

Thank you for getting back to me! I read through many threads and came to the following conclusions/questions. I would like some help with what direction to go in if possible:

    1) As seen in this thread, I downloaded the ftdi drivers and extracted the files. Where should I extract them to and how do I update my AWR with the drivers so it shows the 4 AR-DevPack ones?

    2) I read this thread (e2e.ti.com/.../835909 and while it seems like this person has the same issue as me (two serial ports), this person figured out they had the same com port for each of them. This is not my issue, as you can see from the screenshot from my previous thread post.

    3) I found this instruction manual to install and uninstall some other set of drivers. Can you clarify more what these are?

    FTDI Driver Installation Procedure.pdf

I am trying to figure out how what things to download to get the 2 serial ports (for when i insert DCA1000) to turn to whatever is necessary for the mmwave Studio to discover my device.

    Thank you so much!

    George

  • Hello George,

    1. You can get the certified FTDI drivers from the latest mmWave Studio and mmWave SDK version. Please check the website for that.

Once you have the latest drivers, you just have to follow the procedure mentioned in section 2.3 of the mmWave_studio_user_guide.pdf to update the drivers for the COM ports.

    2. Now regarding your problem of just 2 COM ports, can you please confirm if your USB is connected to RADAR_FTDI port on the DCA1000 EVM?

    Regards,

    Ishita
