OPT3101: Distance jumps after a reset

Part Number: OPT3101

I have used the OPT3101 on a custom board and made the following observation: If I reset the sensor-system (or reboot) the distance reading jumps between two distinct values (plus some noise), as seen in the graph below. This happens both in amplitude and phase/distance.

After reset my system loads setup-data from an external eeprom (connected to the microcontroller, not to the OPT3101) in to the OPT3101.

The OPT3101 runs in continuous mode and no HDR is used. The setup parameters in eeprom include cal-parameters for crosstalk and phase-offset, but not for square-wave nonilnearity or temperature.

What could be the reason for those distance jumps?

  • Here is also a plot of Phase/Amplitude, showing 4 distinct states after resetting OPT3101 sensor system.

  • Hi Markus,

Our device expert is out for the holidays so may be some delay getting back here until after the holidays.

    Best,

    Alex

  • Another Info: Plotting the above in a polardiagram reveals the 4 distinct phase/amplitude states seen after OPT3101 reset (each blue cross is a measurement after a system reset).

It seems that this constellation  not depending on the location: It looks the same independent of the amplitude or phase (distance)

I guess OPT3101 internally samples at 40MHz. Using 10MHz light modulation there is an 90 degree phase ambiguity between sampler and illumination driver after each system reset.

  • Hi Markus,

Thanks for the additional details. Will follow up with you after holidays.

    Best,

    Alex

  • Hi Markus,

Could you please share the raw data as well here?

    Best,

    Alex

  • Hi Alex,

below is a dataset showing three rows: Distance, Amplitude, Phase. It was taken w/o calibration and with the PD covered.

I have recorded 10 measurements, then reset the device, then 10 measurements again, and so on.

    Best,

    Markus

  • Hi Markus,

My apologies for the delay here. I am still looking into this and will send an update by end of this week.

    Best,

    Alex

  • Hi Markus,

This is not expected from the device and i am having trouble replicating. How many devices do you see this happening on? Are you able to replicate this on the EVM?

    Best,

    Alex
