TDC1000: Ultrasonic Analog Front End TDC1000 for measuring Metal Thickness

Part Number: TDC1000
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7200

I am researching for a new project in which objective is to measure Metal Plate thickness which is in the range of 2 mm to 50 mm. Technology would be Ultrasonic Echo reading.

Application - Many applications are listed like Flow, Concentration, Distance and Fluid ID in TDC1000 Datasheet. But no where mentions Thickness Measurement, specially Metals.

Methodology - Trigger a pulse on plate surface and record TOF for first few responses by TDC7200. Then Application specific logic with the help user set other physical parameters like sound speed in material, controller will determine thickness mathematically.

Question is, weather TDC1000 along with TDC7200 will be capable of doing so? I wish to capture echos from metal medium.

I have not selected any parts for this. Please suggest any other parts that suits better.

If above parts are capable of doing so then I should proceed for EVM and testing. Please so ask for any query.

Thank You.

  • Ravi,

We have not tried using the TDC1000 for thickness detection of metals, we should be able to do this by attaching 2 transducers at either end of material & check the TOF and determine the thickness of the metal.
  • Thanks for Replay Bharat,

My application doesn't have access to other side of material. This is going to be a portable device and target object is Pipes. So no other side access.

Can't TCD1000 can detect echos coming back from material boundary as they have acoustic boundary, metal to Gas or Liquid. Here is some reference from Wiki.

If TDC1000 can detect Echos and TDC7200 can measure time of flight, Ep in figure, then it would be possible to calculate thickness. What you think about it?

  • Ravi,

Your explanation sounds very good in theory, however if the junction post Ep is consistent then this config can work well to detect the thickness of pipes. Please try this and let us know if you need any further assistance in this regards.
