TS3L501E: Application use case

Hello,

My customer is considering using the TS3L501E in the following application:

Is it okay to use TS3L501E for the above use case?

In particular, can the TS3L501E be damaged by ESD coming from the RJ45 connector? Do you have any workarounds for this?

    The block diagram looks good, the TS3L501E is a 2:1 ethernet multiplexer that has built in ESD protection up to the rating in table 6.2 on the datasheet. If their application has a risk of ESD events greater than the rating, then the device can be damaged unless further protection is added to the circuit. I would ask your customer for further clarity on the level of ESD events they expect so the correct level of protection can be recommended.

    What is meant by Hot-Swap in the block diagram? Will the TS3L501E remain powered on but only the I/Os be floated?

  • Hi Tyler,

    All three units can be mounted and dismounted from the M/B.

    When the right unit with the TS3L501E is dismounted and mounted, TS3L501E's power is turned off and on.

    However, if the left two units are dismounted and mounted, the TS3L501E's power of right unit remains intact.

    Could there be a problem with the TS3L501E application they plan to use?

    There shouldn't be an issue if any of the boards are dismounted, the only concern is when the TS3L501E is powered off and voltage is applied to the IOs. It is recommended to power up VDD first then apply voltage to the IOs but as long as the voltages are withing the absolute max rating, there shouldn't be damage to the device.
