Hello, I need to generate a Tri-Level Sync Pulse:

From Wikipedia:

The main pulse definition is as follows: a negative-going pulse of 300 mV lasting 40 sample clocks followed by a positive-going pulse of 300 mV lasting 40 sample clocks. The allowed rise/fall time for each of the transitions is 4 sample clocks. This is with a clock rate of 74.25 MHz

I'm looking at the CD4053 device and looking in the datasheet for the min/max on the analog inputs. I intend to connect -300mV to A and +300mV to B. I will connect ay and by together and run the sum through an RC low-pass filter. I trying to find in the datasheet the min/max voltage on the inputs A/B/C.

Can you help me? Also if there is a better device please let me know.

Oops, I forgot to mention that I will need to support 3G SDI and the clock is 148.5Mhz.

Hi Joe,

The CD4053B as well as the CD4051B and CD4052B input signal range is limited to the supply voltage event if it isn't as obvious in the datasheet spec. However we do not recommend exposing the device to voltages beyond the supply voltage range because it violates the absolute maximum ratings of the device and state in note (1) it increases the risk of permanently damaging or causing reliability issues.

Can you specify what supply voltage are you using for your application?

The bandwidth supported by CD4053B is 30MHz. It is recommended to select a switch with bandwidth that is 3x the signal frequency.

TMUX1133 is a newer device with low Ron and higher bandwidth. I have included the device comparison below:

Oops, I just noticed that this won't work. I need to generate a ground level, 300mV level and -300mV level. Is there a device that has 3:1 or 4:1? That can't handle negative voltages?

Hi Joe,

The only switches with 3 channel configuration that support negative voltages is the CD4053B, CD74HC4053,and CD74HCT4053.

Thanks for the device suggestions. I think I can get the TMUX1134 to work. I will connect +300mV on SA1A, -300mV on S2A and ground on S3A. I will connect the outputs D1 to D2 to D3 and then through an RC filter. This should work.

Joe,

Yes, I just checked and the TMUX1134 can take in the -300mV on the signal path. The valid signal path input/output voltage for TMUX1134 ranges from VSS to VDD. So you should be good.

For Higher negative voltage support, the CD4k devices would be better recommendations.
