TMUX6208: Multiplexer for CAN bus and K-Line

Part Number: TMUX6208

Hi Team,

In our customer's application, they will switch CAN bus and K-Line between different channels. He would like to know if TMUX6208 and MUX36xxx would be fast enough to switch these digital signals. The CAN is up to 5 MBPS while the K-Line is only 10400 baud. If these devices can't be use for CAN bus and K-Line, can you please suggest the devices that would fit the applications.

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

These devices will pass analog/digital signals up to the bandwidth of the channel. For the rates the application is using I'd suggest probably around 10MHz at least to be on the safe side.

For the TMUX36xxx line I don't think you need to be concerned with speed - the device has lower on capacitance than the 6208 which will give it a higher bandwidth. I don't foresee problems due to speed on this

However there may be some issues depending on the system setup with the TMUX6208 - please see below for some information that I can use to give you a better estimate for max bandwidth of the channel as well as if this application should work.

    1. Do you know the capacitance of each line that the mux is going to be attached to -> the bandwidth tests have a 5pF load capacitor for the TMUX6208 so anything above the 5pF will degrade bandwidth, but you might be okay because of the slower speeds.

    2. What voltage supplies are you planning on using for the multiplexers ? Lower supply voltages typically mean a lower bandwidth.

Please let me know so we can suggest the correct part if this solution isn't going to work well enough!
