TS3L501E: Is it possible to use TS3L501E to mulitplex signals on RJ45 cable?

Part Number: TS3L501E

Hello,

Is it possible to use TS3L501E to mulitplex signals on RJ45 cable? From the datasheet I understand that this chip is used to multiplex signals between PHY and RJ45 connector before magnetics. What is the behavior if used after magnetics, that is, signals on Ethernet cable?

Thanks,

Sanjeev Karaiyan

  • Sanjeev,

The TS3L501E is a passive FET switch and doesn't have any protocol TX/RX or drive capability. As you mentioned most people use the device between the PHY and RJ45 magnetics to have all the ICs behind the protective magnetics. As long as the voltages seen by the TS3L501E are within the recommended operating conditions I do not see a reason why it can't be used after the magnetics except that the TS3L501E will not support negative voltages. There will need to be some sort of DC bias on the bus after the AC coupling magnetics.

Why do you need to place the switch after the magnetics?
Do you have a diagram of the connections or other parts in the system?

    Thank you,
    Adam

    >> I want to use TS3L501E as line breaker between two Ethernet devices. So I need to place this after the magnetics and on the line.

Do you have a diagram of the connections or other parts in the system?

    >> Please refer below figure.
