unknown device error

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP-TS430PZ100, MSP430FG4619

Hello,

I am using a MSP430FG4619 mounted on a MSP-TS430PZ100 development board. I downloaded CCSv5 and am trying to connect to the target using a MSP-FET430UIF. I received the board pre-assembled and previously used with no known hardware issues.

Upon installation, I updated both the FET driver to version 1.4.0.0 and CCS to version 5.5.0.00077. The device manager recognizes the FET and connected it to COM3. Having never used CCS before, I was following the "Get Started with Code Composer" video from TI on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IK9jnTPwRa0), and when I tried to connect to the target, I got an "Error connecting to target: unknown device".

I verified the voltage on all VCC pins, so the board seems to be receiving power from the JTAG connector. I pulled up RESET to high as well, but to no avail. I am not sure what the issue is.

Upon researching the forums, some solutions suggested trying to connect with free software from elprotrnic.com. I couldnt find a download link there, that was free anyway. I perused the user guide (slau056l.pdf) and datasheet (slas508i.pdf) but could not find out whether additional pin connections were necessary or an external crystal (32.768k) was required.

Thanks for your help,

RIchard Palmer

  • Hi Richard,

a couple things.  In the device manager is it enumerating as a CDC device or HID device?   If you have the correct dll version, it should show up as a CDC device and a virtual msp COM port.

Another quick thing to double check.  Do you have a target configuration in your project and if so, how is it set up?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Thank you for the prompt response.

The device is showing up as a CDC in the device manager, and has a virtual msp COM port.  The target configuration is as shown in the following figure. I hope the image isn't too small to read.  The target configuration file is called MSP430FG4619.ccxml, and the Connection type is TI MSP430 USB1, the default. There was not an option to select the MSP-FET430UIF in the drop down menu.

  • Hi Richard,

that looks fine.   Have you verified board vs JTAG powered?  It is a different JTAG pin used in the two cases.  Also, is there any other setup you have access to to verify the hardware?

One further test, there is a free elprotronic flash programmer for the msp430 - It would be interesting to see if that software can connect.  I use this as a debug tool myself.

    Best Regards,

  • Thank you for your helpful suggestions, upon examination, I decided to replace the integrated circuit. Upon replacement, I was able to connect and debug. I suppose the problem was a faulty IC. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Richard,

thanks for the update and happy to hear you found the issue.

    All the best with development.
