CCS/MSP432P401R: Standard sampling rate of the EnergyTrace tool

Part Number: MSP432P401R
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGYTRACE, MSP-FET

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I am using the P401 board EnergyTrace to measure the current consumption of an Atmel board. I can see the power graph, average consumption etc...

My question is, by launching the energy trace tool and measuring the current consumption of another makers board, what is the sampling rate (Hz) of the tool and how can i adjust it?

Thank you.

  • The EnergyTrace present on the MSP432 LaunchPad uses a different method for measuring energy than a typical sampling current and voltage across a shunt resistor. There is more information here:

  • This post answers the question of sample rate: EnergyTrace FAQ.  The sampling frequency for the configuration you're using is 1ksps.There's no way to adjust it.

So, if i am writing about using this tool to measure the consumption of my other device i cannot say its resolution?, i thought i had read in the energy trace pdf about sampling resolutions up to 2000Hz i think

The thing is, i have ran a test during 86 seconds, when i check the graph at the bottom i have 172 440 records, that equals to 2005 samples per second (if i check in the csv files for the exact amount of time i get 2000 samples per second)

So does that 1ksps equals to 1000Hz?

  • The speed you get will depend on the interface you are using. If you are using a dedicated msp-fet w/ 432 adapter, it will be faster than the built-in XDS110-ET on the launchpad. The 1ksps/1000Hz # came from one of the previous E2E posts, but I don't see a sampling rate listed on the ET Wiki page. I'll try to find where this is documented, but for your purposes I think the answer is that you already have the fastest sampling that you can get with your current hardware since sample rate is not configurable.
