CCS: Which emulator to buy in 2019 for c2000 and hercules

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello.
I'm in need of a suggestion related to which emulator, for c2000 family and hercules family, is worth to buy today.
At the moment we own a couple XDS510USB, a couple c2000 jtag-jet and 4 XDS100v2.
As written in CCS roadmap, in the next CCS major release the XDS510USB emulator is going to be no more supported (since ccs9 will be realased for 64 bit architecture only - processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Category:Code_Composer_Studio_v8 at "Deprecation notices" paragraph).
The jtag-jet emulator doesn't support the recent released chips (28075, 2837x etc).
XDS100 is extremely slow (so much to make it unusable).
Looking on TI website I've seen the XDS200; is written it is fast enought, and it is the best price to performance ratio, but it is a quite old product (16 NOV 2012 - www.ti.com/.../TMDSEMU200-U).
Is XDS200, today, the best choice that will make us operational for many years, or TI plans to develop something new, making XDS200 obsolete (and maybe no longer supported in a few years)?
Thank you in advance

Paolo Andreuzza

  • Paolo,

Check our Debug Probe selection table at: http://www.ti.com/jtag

I completely understand your concerns regarding product longevity. Despite the XDS200 was released back in 2012, it is a pretty popular Debug Probe and there are absolutely no plans to discontinue it in the next years (the aforementioned XDS510-class lasted for about 25 years and was the backbone of our Debug capabilitites). This is the no-compromise choice for the device families you are using.

In 2016 we released the XDS110, which is a step up from the widely popular XDS100 and better performance in several architectures at about the same price. As you can tell from the table I sent before, this has become our entry level recommendation for both device families you mentioned. It has also been adopted by the more modern Launchpads from both Hercules and C2000 families.

The XDS110 significantly outperforms the XDS100 but only on the newer C2000 devices (the ones that have a JTAG ICEPICK router such as F2837x, F28004x). For the legacy C2000 devices, the increase in performance is marginal.

    Hope this helps,

  • Very clear and complete explanation.
    Thank you very much, Rafael.
