CCS/MSP-EXP430G2ET: Firmware update (April 24) for MSP-EXP430G2ET with MSP430G2553

Part Number: MSP-EXP430G2ET

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

When I used the installed version of CCS (8.3) on my Mac, a firmware update is indicated. But, once the firmware update is completed, I can no longer connect to the device.

If I use the cloud version, I get the same message for a firmware update, but it updates and connects just fine. If I then try the installed version, I get the same message and error.

Any thoughts?

  • Hey Todd,

This is the first report I've seen of this, but I also think we have a smaller user base on MAC.

Does the downloaded CCS say that it updated the FET successfully?
Can you check for Updates in CCS? Help - > Check for Updates. I would install any updates for MSP toolchains and GCC.

Let me know if you find/install any updates and if it makes a difference.

    Thanks,
    JD
  • Hi,

In addition to JD's suggestions, I did some testing here and I suspect it may be something on your host, as I was able to use my MSP-EXP430G2ET on my Mojave with CCSv8.3.0 with the original and the updated MSP430 Tools component, as well as with the CCSv9.0.1 with the latest updates.

After updating, did you remove and reconnect the launchpad? Perhaps it may be something to do with the OS USB enumeration.

When you plug the launchpad, do you see it listed on the System Report?

  • Many thanks for the suggestions!

Here's what I've determined so far. I actually have access to both a Mac and a Windows machine, both running CCS version 8.3. If I create a new (empty) project and copy the existing code into the new project for either OS, I get the message about the firmware update. The firmware seems to be updated just fine, because after the update I'm able to debug with none of the aforementioned error messages or conditions. However, if I switch OSes, then I get the same error message, and then have to create a new project and so forth.

So, as of right now, there seems to be something OS-specific to the firmware update that is contributing to the error message about the device not being connected (even though it is - for example, I can see it in the Device Manager under Windows).

But, for now, I do have what seems to be a work-around for my students and their final exam next week...
  • Hey Todd,

I'm glad you found a workaround for your students.

Is it possible for you to share the TI MSP430 Tool chain version numbers for both the PC and MAC versions you are seeing this on? On PC, it should be under help -> about CCS -> Installation details. Probably something similar on MAC.

I'm going to mark this as resolved for now since you have a workaround for your students. I don't have a setup to replicate this on my side, but I'm going to forward this issue on to our tool chain team to investigate. Any additional information you have, feel free to post here.

    Thanks,
    JD
  • JD,

The problem seems to have "disappeared" as mysteriously as it appeared.  For better or worse, at least for now I'm no longer able to reproduce the problem.  But, I am attaching the toolchain information, in case it is useful to the toolchain team.

    Regards, and many thanks!

    Todd

  • Hey Todd,

Thanks for the update. I've passed all the info along to the tool team.

    Thanks,
