Burning Flash on a C6713 Design Using a Windows-7 (64-Bit) Laptop.

I have developed a product around the C6713 that has been sold and installed in many places around the world. So far we have been able to service these systems (upgrading DSP software) using FlashBurn utility software because we designed the boot system compatible to the DSK6713.

My problem is that my Service Engineers are getting new laptops with Windows 7 (64-Bit) and they will not be able to use the CCS3.3 – FlashBurn solution. FlashBurn is not compatible with CCS4.x or CCS5.x.

What is going to be the easiest way for my service guys to upgrade DSP software on these systems? We currently have XDS510USB emulators for the JTAG connection.

From the Spectrum Digital web-site, the XDS510USB emulators are compatible with Windows 7 and CCS4.x or CCS5.x.

My plan was to switch them over to CCS-5.x and write a program to burn the flash from a hex6x generated file.

From Software Design Solutions web-site I have downloaded some source code that I was able to modify to read, write and erase the Flash on my product. Right now I have only done this with CCS3.3.

My problem seems to be that I don’t understand the ASCII format of the hex generated file from the hex6x utility. I assume that I must parse this file to determine what sections get loaded where.

Am I going about this correctly or is there a better way?

  • Hi Dan,

Are you aware of Spectrum Digitals SDFlash utility?

    http://emulators.spectrumdigital.com/utilities/sdflash/

Does this help?  It supports C6000 and C2000 devices as I understand.

  • Lisa,

Thanks, I am looking into this now.

  • Hi Dan,

unfortunately, it appears the information on SDFlash may be a bit misleading and I suspect unfortunately it only supports the C2000 devices.

This leaves no convenient solution for you unfortunately.  The problem has been FlashBurn was a thrid party tool not maintained and it has been hard to keep up with all the variants of external flash people are using.

    My appologies for the confusion.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  •

"No convenient solution" is not an option for me.

I need to supply my service engineers with a way to burn flash memory with a Windows 7 (64-Bit) laptop. These systems will need supported for many years to come.

I think I am really close with my approach. My problem is that I have not yet found a description of the ASCII file format that is generated by the hex6x utility program.

  • I was able to accomplish what I wanted by using hex6x to generate a flat binary file instead of an ASCII file. The programs that I burn run entirely in internal-DSP RAM so they are not spread out all over the memory address range. The flat binary image should always be able to fit in the ROM that I have.

I have this working with CCS3.3 now. I will need to test it with CCS5.x on a Windows 7 machine.

  • Hi Dan,

glad to hear hex6x seems to be a solution for you and all the best with it.
