CC3200-LAUNCHXL: Cannot get board to do anything beyond power on lights

Part Number: CC3200-LAUNCHXL
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200, , UNIFLASH, CC3551

Tool/software:

I ordered and just received both a CC3220-LaunchXL and a CC3200-LaunchXL.   I am able to get the CC3220 to do the out-of-box demo, but I can't get the CC3200 to do anything.   It shows up in the Windows Device Manager, but despite having added the CC3200 SDK to CCS, it is not recognized by CCS.    The out-of-box application for CC3200 (similar to the CC3220) is supposed to be an access point.   But none of my devices can see the WiFi AP.    If I connect to the COM port, nothing is output.   There is only one COM port for the CC3200, for whatever reason.   I also tried using the web-based agent.   Again, the device is not recognized.

Am I maybe missing a step?   All of the getting started links are no longer available on ti.com.   All of these are just gone:

If I browse to any of those links it just takes me to a generic page.

  • Hi,

What version of CCS do you use? CC3200 SDK is designed for old CCS 8.3. Newer versions of CCS may not work properly.

btw ... Why do you start development with CC3200. It is old device. For new development is recommanded CC3235 or CC3220. Even CC3235 and CC3220 are not latest devices and have limitations.

  • I'm using CCS version 12.8.1.00005.   I'm evaluating that CC3200 module because I didn't read anything in TI literature that suggested that it was "old" or shouldn't be used.   So I have to ask, how "old" are the devices that you are suggesting that I should use?   I have a CC3220-LaunchXL as well but from the product documentation it was not obvious to me that the CC3200 was significantly different, that's why I spent $55 to evaluate it.

  • Hi Frank,

Latest SDK for CC3200 is 1.5.0 is from Jan 2020 and was validated with CCS 8.3. Newer CCS will likely not work due to incompatible version of XDCTools. Maybe if you will install latest 32-bit XDCTools  3.51.03.28, but who knows... Nothing that was tested and validated by TI. With CC3200 you will also need to use old Uniflash software version 3.4.1.

CC3200 devices were released to market at 2013. These devices are still at active production, but you cannot expect any improvement (e.g. SDK). CC3220/CC3235/CC3230 devices are much better in term of features and even documentation is much better. CC3220 were released at 2016/2017 and CC3235 at 2019. At present time is TI starting releasing brand new generation CC3551.
