CCSv5.3 "Error Initializing Emulator" for Spectrum Digital F28335 eZdsp (using onboard emulation)

Hello all,

I have an issue: After the guys at Spectrum Digital tested my board (had no issues on their CCS installation) it was returned to me and now I am experiencing the same issues as before - "Error Initializing Emulator". I've seen a few posts regarding this but this issue does not seem to have been resolved in those posts so I figured I'd make a fresh one just in case anyone has recently gotten past this. So in summary, when attempting to run an example on my F28335 EZ-DSP, I receive an error which reads "Error initializing emulator".

1) I am using the onboard emulator.

2) The USB port works fine since I tested my DSK6713 board which initialized and was able to run a program.

3)I've set the target configuration to "Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator" connection and chose the "EZDSPF28335" device.

Does anyone know how solve this issue? I don't think I should send the board back since it was verified that it works on "their" system which uses the same CCS version.

  • While this may not be the issue you are encountering, I have seen this specific error come up when I have a mismatch of the emulator hardware and the actual target configuration that was launched.  On my system, I have a number of target configuration files created for various boards in a shared location.  I need to be careful to launch the appropriate configuration.  Sometimes when just hitting the "debug" button, it picks up the wrong target configuration.

  • Thanks for the response Brandon. The problem actually is (I suppose) that I am using the wrong mini-USB cable! I did a continuity test on the pins of the mini-B port and the data pins are shorted meaning the cable is for charging only. This explains why the board isn't even getting recognized. I will run down and pick up a data transfer mini-USB cable and I think the problem will be solved.
