CCS/TMS320C6421: integration of DSPBIOS 5.31.06 in CCS8

Hello,

We have an application running on TMS320C6421, developped with CCS3.3 on XP PC.

This application uses DSPBIOS 5.31.06.

I am trying to move it on PC with Windows 7 and CCS8. I could install DSPBIOS on this new PC.

The problem is that I can't make CCS8 recognize this DSPBIOS, So it stucks with this error message:

!ERROR: This project has DSP/BIOS content, but no DSP/BIOS tools are currently installed. Please install DSP/BIOS tools and re-migrate this project.

I found posts for migration of DSPBIOS to CCS 4 or 5, but it doesn't fit and work...

Can you give me steps to include this DSPBIOS in CCS8 ?

Hi,

Unfortunately CCSv8 does not work with this version of DSP/BIOS. You will forcefully have to update it to something newer such as BIOS 5.42.

This effort is only worth if this is a new development; if the project is in maintenance mode I would certainly try to re-create the original development environment in a virtual machine. You can still use CCSv8 to load and debug the code, but you will still be missing all the DSP/BIOS Real-time Analysis tools available in the previous versions.

If you want to migrate, you can download the newer version of DSP/BIOS 5.42 from the CCS App Center (menu View --> CCS App Center). From the opened view, scroll down to the section "Standalone Software" and click on the Download button of DSP/BIOS v5.

Despite there are certainly numerous changes between the two versions (especially in the debug support as I mentioned before), the DSP/BIOS release notes guarantees compatibility at the binary level. Also, from inside the release notes, check the section DSP/BIOS setup guide which mentions some additional details to perform the migration. Also, you will have to update the compiler, as DSP/BIOS 5.4 was tested with a newer version.

If you want to move ahead with the migration, in addition to the DSP/BIOS you will also need to install the C6000 Compiler version 7.x (also available from the CCS App Center, but in the section "Code Composer Studio Add-Ons".

I would also try to import your original CCSv3.3 project into CCSv8 by using the legacy import wizard.
