CCS/TMS320C6424: Code Composer V8 update installer on Windows 7 slow and not working.

Part Number: TMS320C6424

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hi All,

we’re experiencing some strange CCS installer behavior. After selecting a number of Code Generation Tool updates, Code Composer downloads the tools and stores them at ccsv8\eclipse\downloads, asks for a restart and exits, which is correct so far.

But then nothing happens. In the Windows 7 task manager you can see that the automated update process “ccs_update_8.1.0.00011.exe” has been started, but the corresponding dialog will not open for about 15 minutes. After that it will start with the installation. Unfortunately the installation will not succeed. It will only install one CGT update at a time. All other previously downloaded tools will be removed from the ccsv8\eclipse\downloads folder.

What’s even worse is that Code Composer Studio does already register the presence of the tools right after downloading them. You can verify that in HelpàAbout Code Composer StudioàInstallation Details right before restarting CCS. If the installer fails, registration and presence of the tools are out of sync. You have to manually remove the already registered CGT, that could not be installed and try again and wait for another 15 minutes for the installer to run.

Clearly need a fix for this. Any idea?

Best regards,

Flux.

  • Hi Flux,

Could you please zip up the install_logs folder and attach it here?

    Thank you,

    Danish

  • So, what does TI intend to do now?

  • Hi,

I'm trying to reproduce the issue, and will get back to you about my findings soon.

  • Hi Flux,

I was finally able to figure out what's going on. The CCS installer only installs the latest version of a given component, so the installer was ignoring the multiple versions of code gen tools and only installed the last one. While the CCS installer does this, eclipse doesn't discriminate, and downloaded all the versions you requested, which is why they showed up in your installed features list. The behaviour is correct for all other components, only code gen will allow multiple installs of compilers in the same CCS. I'll see what we can do to improve the experience.

  • Hello Danish,

thank you for your reply and your investigation of the download/install issue.

But, the more serious case is that the installer hangs for 15 minutes or so until it suddenly pops up and starts with the installation process. That is happening every time I try to install an update or a new component. Any idea what the reason for that problem may be?

    Best regards,

    Flux.

I haven 't seen that symptom, but on a Windows 10 PC with Window Defender when a CCS 8 update is installed:

    a. The CCS installer starts without delay.

    b. After the CCS installer reports it is verifying the installation, the verification takes approx 10 minutes during which time the Windows task manager shows the Antimalware Service Executable is running. While I haven't investigated think that the CCS installer does something which triggers the Antimalware Service Executable to scan files which slows down the CCS installer.

What does the Windows task manager show as consuming CPU and/or performing disk access when the installer hangs?

  • Hello Chester,

thank you for taking the time to add your experience.

The ccs_update_8.1.0.00011.exe process starts immediately after CCS has been restarted, idles at 0% cpu usage at that time, but the actual update procedure doesn’t begin for 15 minutes or so. No disk activity and no window dialog can be seen until then.

Don't want to open a discussion CCS8 vs. CCS3.3, but, to be honest, the old tools have been working nicely for us and we have been using them until 2017 for our DSP-based products, which sell in 5000+ quantities. The newer tools are full of these kind of bugs. Each day you stumble over 10 of them... :o(. And it takes so much time to somehow circumvent these kind of errors. It is really a bit sad. TI has such a great traditon in DSP-silicon. Unfortunately the later development environments don't come close.

I don't know what the reason is for that. Maybe Eclipse, maybe the need for compatibility across different operating systems, maybe Java, maybe to use lower quality open source software than investing money in own developments.

Ok, the installer has finished installing new CGTs and it only took 20 minutes...

    Best regards,

    Flux.

  • Hello Danish,

are there any news on the hanging installer?

    Best regards,

    Flux.

  • Hi Flux,

The installer downloads some files pre-install which provide diagnostic information, and was slowing things down before the installation started. We've fixed this issue in CCS 8.2.0.

  • Hello Danish,

thank you for addressing the problem. If you want me to test the installer on my machine before releasing it with CCS 8.2.0 please let me know. When can we expect the update to be released?

    Best regards,

    Flux.

  • We expect 8.2.0 to be released end of August, barring any issues.
