CCS/TMS320C6424: Code Composer V8 update installer on Windows 7 slow and not working.

Part Number: TMS320C6424

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hi,

I just downloaded the offline installer of CCS8.2.0. The problem with the hanging installer is still *NOT* resolved.

The whole installation process took about 70 minutes. Looking at the install logs, you can verify that the installer still tried to fetch some stuff over the network. After a timeout period of about 40 minutes the local installation continued. Somewhere at the end of the installation there’s been another period of hang.

Guys, when someone downloads an offline-installer, the install process should not access external sites over the network. Plain and simple.

After the long installation I tried downloading three versions of the code generation tools via CCS8.2.0. As before, the software downloaded the code generation tools and stored them at ccsv8\eclipse\downloads. A required restart of CCS8.2 triggered ccs_setup_8.2.0.00007.exe in the background to finish the installation.

But then, as before, nothing happened, the installer ccs_setup_8.2.0.00007.exe hangs in the background, again trying to access something across the network, taking about 40 minutes to install the code generation tools.

Also, as before, it only installs one of the three downloaded code generation tools. Registration and installation are still out of sync as before.

So, effectively, nothing has changed. The installer is still *NOT* working properly. The timeout periods have even increased, which leads to even longer installation times.

So, reinstalling CCS8.2.0 and the required code generation tools will require half a day. You must be kidding at TI, right?

Regards,

Flux.

  • Hello Flux,

<<< I just downloaded the offline installer of CCS8.2.0. The problem with the hanging installer is still *NOT* resolved.
Using the offline installer, I have installed CCS8.2 without any problems.
Took some time, I have not checked that doing other things.
70 minutes for installation means that you use HDD.
Switch to SSD and it will go smoothly.

The offline installer does not know which TI processor families and debug tools you would use.
Having all staff all together would exceed a Blue Ray disc capacity and still you should be asked what would you like to be installed on.
    Plain and simple.

Finish your CCS8.2 installation and then add what you need.
Use resources monitor to ensure that the installation hangs.

Do you have any other CCS versions on on your comp?
  • Hello Thomasz,

thanks for the reply. Nice to hear, that it works for you. Here it doesn’t.

The installer hangs for 40 minutes without doing anything on the disc. You can verify the logs and see, that it tries to access some stuff over the network, fails, retries and so on. That’s what takes time, not the hdd. Lol. So, what’s the point of an offline-installer, when it’s not an offline installer?

We had that problem with teh CCS8.1.0 installer as well. The timeout was 15 minutes, not 40 minutes like now, though. The thread is actually a follow-up for a thread I had started some months ago for the CCS8.1.0 installer. That problem came up every time, even when installing just a single version of the code generation tools from inside CCS. After restarting CCS, the installer at first hung for 15 minutes, even though a CGT-package is just 50…100MB.

Additionally it was only capable of installing one single CGT-package at a time. When you selected more than one package, it downloaded all of them, but installed only one and then deleted all the downloaded packages again. So it took n x 15 minutes to complete an install. Further on, it already erroneously registered all downloaded packages even though it only installed one of them. Registration and installation got out of sync.

I honestly doubt, it requires more than a few GB to supply a CCS offline installer that’s capable of handling the basic stuff. You can supply additional packages for certain content as you did for the last 10 years or so.

    Best regards,
    Flux.
  • Hi Flux,

    lets focus on the solution.
Do you have any other CCS versions on your comp?
Could you specify your comp CPU, RAM, HDD/SDD?
Could you specify your current config?
When you say: Code Composer V8 update installer on Windows 7 slow and not working.
I am not sure are we talking about update, upgrade?
  • Hi Tomasz,

we’re currently using CCS3.3 in parallel, not during install of course. Attached you will find the install logs of this morning.

The computer is a quad core xeon 3.7GHz with 32GB running Windows 7.

You can verify the installer hangs during installation, because it tries to access some stuff over the network. Maybe you should also contact your colleague danishinnis, who has been working on that problem the last time.

    Best regards,

    Flux.

  • Some time ago I had a similar problem with Win7, however not related to TI's s/w.
Switching BIOS to one core, during an installation, did a trick.
  • Flux - thanks for the logs. There is certainly some internet access issues recorded in there. I will forward them to our installer expert (yes, it is danishinnis).

    Thanks

  • Hi,
by the way, do you have an antivirus running?
  • Hi Flux,
I'm sorry to find your issue with the timing hasn't been resolved. We were unable to reproduce the issue here, and believed we had fixed the problem, but it looks like your system is set up differently. I was wondering if you would be willing to try out a test installer to see if the problem's fixed before the next release? The installer tries to download a couple of files for diagnostics because we've had some installer issues, even if it's an offline install.

For code generation tools, the CCS installer only allows for one version (the latest) of each compiler. If you want to update/install multiple versions, I'd suggest you install them one at a time.

Please let me know if you'd be willing to test the install. I'd really appreciate it.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Hello Danish,

thank you for your support. Yes, I’d would like to test your updated installer. But it has to happen today or tomorrow, because I will be on vacation later on.

Currently your diagnostics pull of some files across the network is the reason, why the offline-installer fails for us. Additionally, we don’t want software that does something else, than what has been advertised.

If you want a customer to participate in a diagnostics program, please ask. Let me set a checkbox or something to participate. Otherwise, please, leave that stuff out.

Btw, what happens if I pull the network connection and start an offline install? Does the installer work faster then?

    Best Regards,

    Flux.

  • Yes, but it didn't display an alarm. I'm working for a larger company, which has a separate IT-department, that centrally handles that stuff. So, it cannot be changed. Nor, can the av-scanner be temporary disabled. At least not officially.
  • What was your av-scanner status during an installation?
  • Hello Thomasz,

    the av-scanner status is fine.

Btw, disabling the network card during installation brings down the installation time for the offline installer from 70 minutes (error case) down to 12 minutes for a full featured install.

    Best regards,

    Flux.

  • Hell Flux,

does it mean that yo have completed your off-line installation?
    Good.
    Just try updates.
  • Yes, I forgot to mention that you have to disable the network card after downloading the packages from within CCS right before it asks to restart. Otherwise you have the same problem again, because CCS does the installation by calling the same installer right before quitting.

Then the installer is being used to install the previously downloaded packages. Unfortunately it can only install one CGT at a time, otherwise the registration inside CCS gets out of sync with the actually installed CGTs. That needs to be addressed as well.

    Best regards,
    Flux.
  • Good to know.

I have observed that node, javascript and its asynchronous I/O execution could make a lot of side effects.

I had no problem installing CCS8.2
