CCS: MSP-EXP430F5529LP and DLP7970ABP

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP-7970ABP

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Good morning
We are working to implemente your RF37S114HTFJB tag in a civil product.
We purchased from Farnell your  MSP-EXP430F5529LP and DLP7970ABP boards to read and write the TAG
We have programmed the MSP board with the CCS UNIFLASH 3.4.1 with the following firmware
 C: \ ti \ nfc \ TRF7970A_RW_1.03.00 \ examples \ boards \ MSP-EXP430F5529 \ F5529EXP_TRF7970A_ALL_NFC_MODES \ Debug \ F5529EXP_TRF7970A_ALL_NFC_MODES.out here attached
The NFCLink 1.8 program in W7 Home premium, connects to the board on COM6 at 115000 8, N, 1, H and on the bottom of the progr appears the word “connect” in green.
Unfortunately when I put the tag on the center of the transmitter antenna area of the DLP7970ABP card I can not write or read anything using one of the three modes provided by NFCLink.
Even using the Start NFC testing function the program seems to work but I can not get any answer.
Can you give me any advice about the aforementioned problems ?

Thanks a lot for your valuable suggestions

  • Hello Sorzi,

This is expected, the antenna for the DLP-7970ABP is too large to read the tag.

Please see www.ti.com/.../scba035a.pdf which explains the optimum antenna sizes.

Unfortunately we do not provide an EVM that has a matching antenna, so you will need to procure one.
  • Good morning.
    Thank you for your advice.
In the meantime, we purchased the MSP-EXP430G2: G2 board from Farnell, on which we loaded the sample program TRF7970ABP_RFID_Reader_Demo.
By this board the TRF7970 ... we can read the TAGs with no problem using Hyperterminal Windows.
The antenna, even if not adapted to these TAGs, works quite well just in read mode.
Maybe using NFCLink by the previous card, do we need some special settings?
  • Hello Sorzi,

That's surprising to me because I almost never can read the tags with that setup either, and if I do, it's terrible reliability.

The best available means to improve your results won't be software modifications, but rather getting the right antenna for the setup.

The issue is hardware related, and while maybe a few settings helped improve performance slightly, that is not a substitute for using the correct hardware outlined in our app note. You will not get replicable performance without having properly designed antennas.
