CCS/TMDSEVM5517: How to access the "on-board emulation (XDS510 class)"

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

In the C5517 EVM Quick Start Guide they mention that the C5517 EVM DSP board includes on-board emulator (XDS510 class). I can't find that as a valid option when I chose a new CCS project.

What am I supposed to select? Do I need to download an older version of CCS just to communicate with my new (It just arrived last Friday) development board?

Sheldon,

The settings for various development kits and boards is shown at the page below:

However, the CCS version you are using is 64-bit and therefore incompatible with the Built-in debug probe of your board. (this is mentioned in section "Latest release information" of the CCS Downloads page). You would need to use up to CCSv8.3.1.

Thanks for your response.

Does that mean CCSv8.3.1 (and before) is a 32-bit program and will only work with a 32-bit operating system (like Windows XP)? I am using a 64-bit version of Windows 7.

Sheldon,

No. CCSv8.3.1 works in both 32 and 64-bit systems, but the XDS510 Debug Probe (the same present in your development kit) only interfaces with the 32-bit version of CCS.

CCS for Windows has been used with 64-bit Operating Systems for about 10 years now and is proven to work.

Rafael,

I now have CCS 8.3.1 running on my computer but I can not figure out why I can't connect to my TMDSEVM5517.

When I connect a USB port to the TMDSEVM5517 I see that a "Spectrum Digital TM320C5510 DSK" is now in my "USB Based Debug Tools" in the Device Manager. However when I choose "EVM5517" as the Target I do not see a "TM320C5510 DSK" option. The only thing it lets me choose (that has a non-grayed out "Verify" button) is "Spectrum Digital XDS510USB Emulator". When I press "Verrify..." I get the "ERROR -- XDS510-USB Emulator not connected/enumerated" message.

Any ideas / suggestions?

Thanks, Rafael! I was not selecting the correct "Connection". I had chosen one that didn't have the "Test Connection" button greyed out. When I went to test connection I got an error.

It turns out I don't need to test the connection. It just works when I go to Debug my sample code. Why the correct connection's "Test Connection" is greyed out, I don't know.

Now I'm moving forward...

Hi,

Thanks for reporting back your results.

The "Test Connection" feature requires some infrastructure from the third party company to be active - in this case, Spectrum Digital did not implement this for their development kits.
