Hi,

I watched a really good video about setting up a J-TAG debugger for a device running Linux:

The way the user setup the debugger was that the J-TAG was for the Linux Kernel they were using, and their user space program was debugged using the GDB server in Linux.

Can a J-TAG device be used to debug a user program running in Linux?

Hi, Ben,

Some EVMs have on-board emulator and some don't. For those don't have on-board emulator, you need an external emulator (J-TAG device) connected to the board. OMAP_L138 doesn't have onboard emulator, so you need a J-TAG device if you want to debug that way. Your "user program" is a "user space program" in the tutorial video.

Hi Rex,

I'm just wondering if it is possible to use the J-TAG debugger instead of the GDB Server in Linux to debug a program running in user space?

If needed an operational Ethernet Port on our board to debug our user space applications through the GDB Server in Linux this would really influence things.

Hi, Ben,

You should be able to use J-TAG for debugging. I haven't used either J-TAG or GDBServer at work. Printf in the code works for me.
