TIDA-00164: Questions about TIDA-00164 board

Part Number: TIDA-00164

Good morning
I'm an italian engineer and I'm developing a data acquisition system for a company that manages waste water plants. My need is to acquire data from analog sensors and your ads8688 ADC seems
good for my application. Some time ago I checked you site and found your reference designed board (TIDA-01214) and asked some questions about it. But, searching again your site, I found your TIDA-00164 board and it seems to me a better solution to my problem.

My purpose is to integrate that board in the device I'm developing, which uses an ARM cortex CPU board with SPI interface.

My questions are:

1 - Do you confirm that it is possible to connect your board to a CPU by means the SPI bus?
2 - Is it possible to build the board using the ADS8688A instead of the ADS8688? The extended measurement range ±1.28 V, ±0.64 V of the ADS8688A would be useful to me, since some sensors generates an output signal in the range ±1.0V.

3 - Some sensors of mine generate an output signal in the range 4 - 20 mA. If I use the ADS8688A how do the board features change?

Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards.

  • Hello Mauro,

Thanks for reaching out to us.

    Regarding your questions:

    1. Yes, SPI master should be able to operate the ADC. Please consider the guidelines explained in section 5.1.2 in the user guide, most notably you need to drive  the data with the rising edge, and maintain an SPI clock below 10 MHz if the mentioned isolator is to be used. Higher speeds are still supported but isolator delays must be then compensated by the SPI master, this is illustrated in detail in the TIDEP0033 design.

    2. At first glance, I don't see an obstacle on using the ADS8688A, it should be compatible to a great extent. However, closer look at datasheet is required.

    3. For combined voltage and 4-20 mA analog input, there are several ways in implementing that, based on the requirements of the design. I recommend to have a look on the different 4-20mA designs under our PLC Analog Input  page.

    Kind Regards,

    Ahmed
