TIDA-01159: TIDA-01159

Part Number: TIDA-01159
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC21520, UCC27517A, UCC27511A

Hi!

Thank you for your kind answers.

I want to make a Interleaved boost converter like the one shown above.

I purchased a TIDA-01159 gate driver from TI to apply it to the boost converter.

I want to drive one MOSFET by connecting OUTA and OUTB as shown in Figure 17 of the SLUA778A document.(INA and INB is short)

So I want to use two TIDA-01159 to drive two MOSFETs.

Is there a circuit problem?

Thank you.

  • Hi Kim,

Thank you for your question. I work on the applications team in the high power drivers group.

UCC21520 has excellent delay matching and is fully capable of having its outputs paralleled, as you read in SLUA778A.

We typically see customers lean more towards single channel drivers for interleaved boost PFC, though I understand that it is nice to have a working solution with TIDA-01159.

If this answered your question, could you please press the green button? If not feel, free to ask more questions.

    Thanks and best regards,

    John

  • Thank you for your kind reply.

We want to make a 3kW  interleaved boost converter.

    ( nominal input voltage = about 200VDC, input current = about 15A

nominal output voltage = about 410VDC, input current = about 7.5A)

Switching frequency for mosfet drive is planned to be about 16kHz.

Question 1) "We typically see customers lean more towards single channel drivers for interleaved boost PFC "

==> Is it because it reflects price, efficiency, etc.?

Question 2) Is there a recommended gate driver for the 3kW interleaved boost converter?

       (for our project)\

    Thanks and best regard.

    KIM

  • Hello Kim,

For single phase PFC, a single channel low-side gate is commonly used to drive the active switch to minimize switching losses from the FET.

This is a cost effective solution and some drivers are optimized (higher drive current, added protection features, reduced size, reduced prop delay, etc...)

For  a single phase 3kW interleaved boost, UCC27511A or UCC27517A would be good options, They offer the high drive strength and low prop delays to enable higher switching frequencies and drive higher gate charge FETs.

Additionally, we have several reference designs available on the link below:
