PMP30693: TPS63802 alternative for higher output voltage?

Hi,

The PMP30693 design uses a very clever technique of charging the backup supercapacitor with TPS63802 running in reverse mode. Maximum output voltage of TPS63802 is 5.2V. If an application calls for higher output voltage, namely 12V, would it be a matter of picking any buck-boost converter able to run in reverse mode? Thanks.

Hi Tim,

during normal operation of the PMP30693 the main power is directly connected to the system and both have the same voltage level. So for a 12V system the input and output voltage will be 12V. This will destroy the supercapcitors because the PMP30693 uses a simple resistor + diode to pre-charge the supercap, therefore the maximum input voltage is limited to 5.3V. Furthermore the maximum voltage of the ideal diodes is 5.5V. So the PMP30693 is optimized for an 3.3V system voltage.

Hi Florian,

As far as I understand, the precharge circuit is optional and can be omitted if the application does not need precharging.

The supercapacitors I am aiming at are limited to 2.7v..3.0v, and system output voltage is 12v, so I guess the reverse mode cannot be used here.

I will take look at PMP30528, thank you.

Hi Tim,

thank you for your feedback. Just one comment, the precharge circuit is needed otherwise the TPS63802 is not able to start. The TPS63802 handles supercap charging after pre-charging supercaps to about 1.8V.
