PSPICE-FOR-TI: using Pspice CIR files

Part Number: PSPICE-FOR-TI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA197

Is there an easy way to use an existing CIR file from another Pspice tool in PSPICE for TI?

In other versions of Pspice, the CIR file can be opened and directly run the simulation.

  • Mark,

Thank you for the post, and thank you for your interest in Pspice for TI.

In commercial Pspice, you can open a circuit netlist and run it using Pspice A/D (the Pspice plotting window/pop-up).

You can do the same thing in Pspice for TI.

First, run one of the reference designs - the OPA197 runs quickly - and when the plotting window opens
and the sim completes, open the desired .CIR file via File/Open followed by Simulation/Run <Schematic Name> .
If the netlist has no errors, the sim will run and the graphing window (within the larger plotting window) will appear.
You can plot the curves that you have specified in the probe statements by adding them with Trace/Add Trace   menu item, or the corresponding icon( ).

I'm glad you asked this, because it hadn't occurred to me that we should be able to open the plotting window without first running a sim.
Running a sim first, just to open the plotting window seems like a bit of a workaround.
I will check with the Pspice vendor for an alternative method for opening the plotting window without first running a sim.
Once that info is available, it will be posted to this thread.

    Regards,
    John

  • Hi John,

I like your response, as I actually tried this before I posted this question, so it's good to know I was on the right track.

It kind of worked.  Pspice for TI would take the cir file and load it with no errors. However it would report that the file had some third-party models (which it does) and could only support between one and three traces, and I needed to reduce the number of traces.  The sim would abort at that point. I don't know how to reduce the traces in the CIR file. The Trace/Add trace menu is grayed out under this condition, I guess because the sim never actually ran.

I can send you the cir file I am trying to use if you'd like to try.  It is from a customer, so I can send it through TI email

  • Mark,

    Please send it by email.

Before doing that, check the .PROBE statements and see if there are more than three waveforms listed.
If any of the models in the circuit are not in the Pspice for TI internal library, plotting will be limited to three waveforms.
It sounds like that's the case here, and if you can revise the probed signals to three, it might run.

If that doesn't work, please send it along.

    Regards,
    John

  • Mark,

The vendor replied to the question about opening the plotting window w/o running a sim first:

[Opening the plotting window w/o runnign a sim]... can be done by using View Simulation Result menu pick under PSpice or icon in PSpice toolbar or using F12 key on PSpice project - Schematic page.

It will launch PSpice waveform view - load simulation results (.dat , waveforms) if results are present ( from last simulation run) or prompt to run simulation if results are not present.

    Regards,
    John
