WEBENCH® Tools/LDC1312: Making PADS parts from webench coil designer

Part Number: LDC1312

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hi,

We are working with LDC1312 and pcb spiral coils. We've been able to generate coil geometry with
webench.ti.com/.../

However, we have trouble importing the geometry into Mentor's PADS component. The generated part generates part with 0603 or 0402 footprint without the coil design. Coil design is supplied with ascii, but we are unable to import or copy it to actual layout file or component footprint (pcb decal) due to errors or simply not copying.

How can we actually use the supplied geometry from the pads in actual layout?

  • Hi Matti,

We are looking into this issue. We will get back to you.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Praveen

  • Hi Matti.

We were able to import the coil to PADS tool successfully. Please find the PADS layout file and a screenshot image of the layout below.

    Coil.zip

    Regards,

    Janardhan S

  • Hi Janardhan,

I did manage to import the coil from ascii to that point too.

As a clarification the question was how to import or copy that coil to the layout-file that contains the rest of the electronics. Or make an component decal from that layout/ascii-file.
We can't redo the whole circuit if changes to the coil are needed.

I hope you can help in importing the coil in either way

    BR,

  • Hi Matti,
Thanks for clarification here. Since this is a import issue with Mentor graphics tool, please work with mentor support team to get further help.

    Regards,

    Janardhan S

  • Hi,

Thank you Janardhan, but unfortunately this is not an acceptable solution. We need instructions how we can actually add the coil to an actual design.

    BR

  • Hi Matti,

Let me check and get back to you if there is any possible solution from our side here. In meantime I agree with Janardhan above on contacting mentor support team for further help on this.

    Best Regards,

    Bhushan

  • Hi Matti,

I checked this internally with the team and I am afraid that we do not see any other solution for this, other than contacting mentor support team.

    Best Regards,

    Bhushan

  • Dear Bhushan,

Thanks you for your response. It however does not resolve the issue of not being able to use the provided geometry. I would require at least instructions how to use the geometry.

    BR,

    Matti

  • Hi Matti,

I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the tool and are unable to use this.... If you are looking for a tool to optimize and analyse and would need to modify your design I would recommend that you use our LDC Calculator. This tool will help you design and optimize the parameters prior to going to layout.

As Janardhan has pointed out that the tool is able to import I would recommend reaching out to Mentor if the files are not as expected. As I understand you want a design tool that needs minimal changes to the final coil and LDC Calculator will help here.

Let me know if this helps.

  • Dear Arjun,

Thanks for your response and additional information. Sadly I feel it is a bit offtopic.

Though the coil somewhat imported, nobody still has provided any instructions how you would use it in an actual layout. There are still integral steps missing in getting the imported picture into an useable part and pcb decal.

TBH, this isn't just an issue with mentor's software and sweeping the problem to them feels a bit of an easy way out since this will be the question with every pads user.

    BR,
    Matti

  • Hi Matti,

Once you download the file there is a readme.txt and this is the information I get. I would still reach out to the mentor graphics team and try to figure out how to use the files that are provided by the webench tool. The webench tool export is only a guidance.

Let us know if this can help in getting you the direction you need.

To import your new BOARD file into PADS:

    1. Unzip the downloaded folder files to a local directory and
    Start the PowerPCB program.
    2. Select File/Import from the menu at the top of the screen.
    3. From the windows screen select the file and path listed above.
The file should have the extension ".asc".
    4. You should now have an image of your board available in PADs.

To import your new LIBRARY PARTS to PADS:
    1. Start the PowerPCB program.
    2. Select File/Library from the menu at the top of the screen.
    3. Select the library to translate into from the "Library" list box.
    4. Select the Decal icon.
    5. Select import from the bottom of the library screen.
    6. Select the *.d file included in the zip file.
    7. To import a matching symbol with your footprint, simply
repeat the above proceedure (#4 - #6) for the CAE (*.c) and Parts
(*.p) files using the appropriate Icons.

  • Dear Arjun,

I have indeed read readme and I do know how to import the files to PADS. However there is no coil in those files. PCB decal contains only footprint for the chip capacitor. Sadly these instructions are not a solution.

  • Hi Matti,

We understand you are able to import the exported files from WEBENCH to PADS tool. But you would like to extract the coil to the PADS component library for use with your other designs. Unfortunately we do not have PADS expertise within our team, so we are not able to provide you with instructions on how to import the coil to your PADS component library. Please feel free to reach out to PADS experts from Mentor on how to do this. Sorry that we are not able to help you more on this. We will go ahead and close this post.

    Best Regards,

    Bhushan

  • Hi Bhushan,

    Thanks for letting me know.
