TIDA-00817: Replacement of BQ76PL455 with BQ79606A-Q1

Part Number: TIDA-00817
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ79606A-Q1, BQ76PL455A, BQ79616

Can we replace the chip BQ76PL455 with BQ79606A-Q1 for making a 3S active cell balancing solution from the TIDA-00817 design?

How EMB1428QSQ can be configured for lower gate driving than rated 12 gates?

  • Hi Anil,

We do not recommend using the active balancing reference design with bq79606a as our reference was for bq76pl455a. If you decide to use our newer devices (bq79606a or bq79616) which we recommend, then we advise to use passive balancing solutions as they have integrated CB fets.

  • Does TI have any solution for active balancing for 3S to 6S range of Li-ion battery packs?

Does it mean the TIDA-00817 is obsolete?

Is there a way of connecting lesser cells to TIDA-00817 or is it designed for only 16S battery packs?

  • Hi Anil,

As I mentioned its an older reference design which provides little support for any deviations from exactly how the reference design was done, I would recommend moving towards our passive balancing solutions if possible.
