TIDA-01624: Unable to read signal on mobile app from CC2640R2F

Part Number: TIDA-01624
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2640R2F, CC2541DK-MINI

Hello TI Support,

I've followed the instructions provided on the TIDA-01624 page (https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/tidudw4a/tidudw4a.pdf?ts=1623870620950) to compile and download the embedded firmware using CCSv8.2 and SimpleLink SDK. Despite some initial roadblocks, I've been able to successfully download the firmware onto the FR4 PCB using the XDS110 USB Debug Probe connected to the JTAG of the PCB. For the purposes of this project, I'm using a PCB antenna that has been soldered onto the PCB - please see the images below of my setup.

I've also changed the advertising time of the TIDA-01624 and CC2640R2F in the tida_01624.c and peripheral.c files to 5 minutes (see screenshots below), saved the changes, and then redownloaded the firmware.

I'm using the nRF Connect iOS mobile app to read RSSI. However, despite pressing the wake-up switch, I'm unable to get a signal from the TIDA-01624. I used a multimeter to verify continuity on the antenna. To troubleshoot this issue, I used the CC2541DK-MINI key fob that comes with an in-built antenna, and I was able to read a signal from this device on the nRF Connect app.

Would this be an issue with the firmware or antenna? Is this an issue that you've encountered before and do you have any suggestions on how I can resolve this issue?

  • Hello Abe,

Just to confirm your setup, instead of including the antenna inside the PCB, you soldered it on afterwards?

I think that the issue you are experiencing could be connected to the antenna. Could you check by taking measurements on a spectrum analyzer? You can share them here if you would like me to also take a look.

    Regards,

    Beste

  • Hello Beste, thanks for the reply.

Yes, we soldered the antenna onto the PCB. We tried your suggestion of using a spectrum analyzer and did not get any signal from the PCB.

Would this be an antenna issue, or could there be an issue with the firmware we loaded onto the PCB? Also, do you have any other suggestions on things we can try to resolve this issue?

  • Hello Abe,

Based on what you described in the initial post and the result from the spectrum analyzer, I do think that this is an antenna problem and not firmware. Fortunately, from your test with the key fob's antenna, it appears the rest of the device is working. So I would recommend replacing the antenna instead of soldering it onto the PCB.

    Regards,

    Beste
