TIDA-01606: Is TIDA-01606 fully tested with DESAT connection connected with SiC MOSfet

Part Number: TIDA-01606
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISO5852S, UCC21750

Dear TI,

Good morning.

In TIDA-01606,you can see IS05852S driver is being used to drive SiC  MOSfet.

In ISO5852S driver in DESAT connection, along with 1000V RS1MWF-7 reverse voltage blocking diode a zener diode being connected in series.

Is the zener diode connected in series is reducing DESAT threshold voltage?

Can you explain zener diode, reverse blocking diode used in DESAT connection along with 80mohm,1200V SiC  MOSfet?

Can we use same DESAT connection components of IS05852S driver in UCC21750 also(As UCC21750 is also a SiC  MOSfet driver, will same connection also works here also) ?

Kindly suggest us the solution.

Thank you,

Girish K

  • Dear Girish,

many thanks for your interest in our reference design.

Here, you can find my answers:

    • Zener diode is used to decrease the desaturation threshold voltage. After placing a 3V zener diode, the new threshold voltage will be Vds= 9 V (datasheet) - 3 V (zener) - 0.6 V (blocking diode).
    • SiC MOSFET has with respect to IGBT Si a lower thermal capacitance. When short circuit is happening, SiC MOSFET will not be good in handling this condition. Designer will need to decrease the reaction time and peak current in order to keep safe the SiC device. Decreasing artificially the drain source voltage can be a solution.
    • Blocking diode is there when the controlled switch is off. When the controlled switch is off, the blocking diode will handle the DC bus voltage and keep the driver safe.
    • Theoretically, the same principle of zener diode and desat can be applied also to UCC21750.

I hope I have fully answer your answers.

    Best Regards

    Riccardo
