TIDA-01606: Regarding using Y capacitor from PGND of inverter to Earth ground to reduce noise

Part Number: TIDA-01606

Dear TI team,

Good morning.

Here i'm sharing a TI forum discussion link where noise reduction method have been discussed through Y capacitor,kindly find below link

https://e2e.ti.com/support/tools/simulation-hardware-system-design-tools-group/sim-hw-system-design/f/simulation-hardware-system-design-tools-forum/809600/tida-01606-voltage-sensing

Is it safe to connect PGND of inverter to Earth ground via Y capacitor?

kindly check above links and let us know safety and feasibility of adding Y capacitor to reduce noise.

Thank you,

Caliber

  • Dear all,

    we cannot guarantee safety feature. In general as a feedback, there are many features that must be consider during safety analysis of a real design:

    • grounding of the converter;
    • behavior of the converter (common mode noise);
    • grounding of the power grid;
    • How is the power electronics contained inside a box;
    • etc.

    In general, introduction of capacitors is a common technique for controlling the common mode current path. This will allow you to have less common mode current flowing in the grid.

    In general, Cy capacitor is chosen against Cx capacitor because of safety feature. Cy capacitor is a capacitor that when breaks it breaks open.

    Best Regards

    Riccardo

  • Dear Riccardo,

    Good afternoon.

    Thank you for your suggestions and reply.
