TIDA-01606: Need Advice For PMSM To TIDA-01606 Application

Hello,

I want to design a new electricity generator like wind turbine using the idea of TIDA-01606. I have 500rpm 3kw 3-phase PMSM. I want my PMSM output rectified as a DC signal that will be the input signal to TIDA-01606.

Could you please advice me a rectifier reference design to make the variable frequency signal to DC?

    from motor to DC link:

    in general a TIDA 01606 can be used too as a rectifier of your generator/motor. You will need to apply FOC and control the Id and Iq. The current control loops implemented in the software are capable of controlling the Id and Iq components but you will need the read of the encoder/resolver (connected to the motor) in order to get the right angle.  By applying  dq control, you will be able to control torque thus power flowing in the DC link.

    Additional note, please be aware that the filtering stage of TIDA 01606 is designed for a 50 Hz application, you will need to apply some modification too in the hardware (filtering).

    from DC link to grid:

    On the same time, I suggest you to keep as DC link voltage controller, the TIDA 01606 tied to the grid.

    Using TIDA 01606 as a rectifer makes system very expensive (A single toroid costs about 100USD). Why can't I use diode rectifier like below image?

    I think that if you do not place an active converter toward the generator you can have the following problems:

    • when rotational speed is very low you cannot push power from generator to the DC link, back EMF of the generator will not be higher than DC bus
    • a lot of coughing torque applied to the torque of the generator, you have a current which is not anymore sinusoidal.

    In general, I think that on the generator side, you will not need the inductors/capacitors. The motor will behave already as a free inductor for your switching application.
