TIDA-01187: High speed LED light modulator

Part Number: TIDA-01187
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA695

Hi Team,

Our customer is looking for a high speed LED light modulator. He wants to send a binary signal (LED ON / OFF) using LED or laser with MHz frequency. Is the TIDA-01187 reference design suitable for his application?

He wants to send his customized binary signal through LED/Laser and would like to know if he can use a 600-700 nm (RED) wavelength light source for the TIDA-01187 reference design. The TIDA-01187 reference design mentioned 5.75-W Pulsed 905-nm Near Infrared Laser Diode. Can he use 600-700 nm (RED) wavelength light source instead?

Regards,

Danilo

  • Hi Danilo,

Sure, this reference design is a great starting point for that. If you break it up into basic blocks, this transmit portion of this reference design is simply a high speed DAC which controls a laser driver IC. Instead of a transformer like most of our high speed DAC EVM use, the analog back end utilizes a high speed op amp (OPA695) to perform the conversion from current to voltage output while also converting from differential to single ended and adding enough gain such that the laser driver ICs enable requirements are met.

The LED output power and wavelength is strictly customer and application specific, so a 600nm-700nm LED should be fine so long as the chosen laser diode and laser driver are compatible, ie the voltage and current requirements of the LED are met by the driver.
