I am using UCC28180 IC for Front end PFC section for EV charger,Power rating is 1KW.

Everything works well but sometimes while turn on AC 230V, Inrush and PFC FET blown ,completely damaged.

what could be the reason for this.This thing happen once in 20 times switching ON

kindly help me to figure it out.

Inrush resistance is 12 ohm

Hi Venkatesh,

Can you share your schematic? Also, if you could provide some oscilloscope shots showing, the inrush current, VGS, VDS, and VOUT?

This can help get to the root cause of what is happening.

Hi sir,

here is the schematics

control sequence - 230V ON,after 20ms PFC enabled output voltage absorbed as 415V,1KW power is loaded thereafter,it is functioning well.

i have tested almost 10 boards,in a long run test alike reliability test this failure happens

Kindly help me to solve this

Hi Venkatesh,

Can you clarify what you mean by inrush is blown? D2 might be making the inrush worse and it would be good to see scope shots of what is happening at power on. For example, if the input inductance is high, you may be having voltage spikes above and beyond the FET rating. Capturing the inrush event on the scope might shed some light on this.

Inrush Blown meaning that Inrush resistor(12ohm) damaged and becomes open circuit.

Initially all currents flow through inrush resistor,therby powering ON aux supply,MCU eventually inrush resistor parallel contactor ON,all current flows through contactor afterwards

I herewith attached inrush current while turn on 230V AC

5A/div

Positive peak is 10A,Negative peak is -10A

Vgs will be zero,Vds is about 325V DC,but i may not probe at this point as of now

Hi Venkatesh,

It would be good to see what is happening across the FET during the inrush event. Note: VGS may not be zero as the ringing can create dynamic conditions.
