TIDA-01243: alternative solution

Part Number: TIDA-01243
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65988DK

Tool/software:

Hello,

My customer, , was looking at the TIDA-01243 for their new design but I saw in an e2e post last year you mentioned that the PD controller is NRND and the ref design will be removed soon (it is still up).

Do we have any newer designs that showcase a similar solution? Here are the below customer details. Could you help join a call with the customer to discuss more options with them?

They are interested in a USB-C docking with display port solution

  1. Can you advise on the customer's requirements? Our customer showed initial interest in having a specialized docking station (ruggedized) so not all the requirements are set in stone yet. However, we are trying to get ahead by coming up with the design, which other customers would be interested in as well. Electrically, this will be a docking station for USB PD Phones, which can stream the phone’s video to a monitor connected to the docking station via DP or HDMI. The video will be transmitted using the USB-C PD alternate mode protocol. We will also convert the phone’s USB data to an USB hub chip, as well having USB-to-Ethernet converters. The USB PD controller needs to support data role swap commands to enable the connected phone to be the host.
  2. How many USBPD ports are needed? 1 at minimum, for connecting to the Host USB PD phone
  3. What roles (source/sink/DRP) for each port? At minimum a source (to charge the USB PD phone), but I am thinking that DRP is better for flexibility.
  4. What power level? To fast charge PD phone will require support for 9V charging at minimum. PPS is desirable though not necessarily a requirement.
  5. Are there any other design needs are there? Other than the PD charging and video transfer over PD, the docking station will be mostly Ethernet based.

Thanks,
Adam

  • Hi Adam,

Our engineer will be able to provide you updated recommendations for your customer's application next week.

  • Hi Adam,

In general, our docking PD controllers (TPS6598x) are only recommended to be paired with TBT and Intel reference designs. We develop closely with Intel to ensure we develop easy to use solutions that work out of the box so customers can copy and paste the reference designs with ease.

Unfortunately, if using these parts outside of the TBT reference design use case, it adds various complexities that we do not recommend, nor will we be able to offer great support on due to such complexities.

Right now, my recommendation would be the TPS65988DK, but please keep the above points in mind when pursuing a custom design with these parts.

Feel free to reach out offline to see how we can better help.

    Thanks,

    Matt
