Webench/LM3488: LM3488 SEPIC converter design using webench

Part Number: LM3488
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM5175-Q1, LM5175

Tool/software: Webench

Hi,

I'm trying design a SEPIC converter using LM3488 since i already have the IC. I tried to design it in webench with the following conditions:

Vin = 5-22V

Vout = 12V

Iout(max) = 10A

Abient temp. = 30*C

Unfortunately, webench displayed a dialogue box saying "Design cannot be created with this device. Please press OK and select a different device from the list Or click below to show why parts were not found."

it seems that webench can'f find a suitable FET for the design. I can't reduce the load current since the required current for my design is 10A. How can I solve this issue?

Your help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi John,
    Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. The design parameters you provided are for a very high power load (from the perspective of the LM3488 in SEPIC configuration). The message indicating that a suitable FET cannot be found indicates that the SEPIC design rules are not able to select a FET with a calculated operating temperature less than its rated maximum, for your design values.

    A better approach to this design would be to see what the WEBENCH Visualizer would suggest for your requirements. When I enter your values in the WEBENCH input form on TI.com home page, the suggested solutions use LM5175 and LM5175-Q1. These devices are 4-switch buck-boost converters that can handle higher output power than the LM3488 SEPIC can.
