Hi,

Fiddling with WEBENCH for the first time (It looked so simple, wonder whether all of this is simply enough), came up on the following design:

Looking at the design, I have a few questions:

1. Is there a significant change to the transformer necessary, or is this sufficient ?

2. Looking at the schematic, it looks like a bare bones schematic. Is the schematic design described absolutely sufficient, or does this imply that a similar design as per other TI reference is to be used ?

Would be nice, if someone could clarify.

Hi Manu,
Here are some of my comments-

a. Transformer design looks good for this condition, so we should be ok here.
b. yes, this looks like a bit simplified version of the EVM schematic. I see we dont have gate resistor, filter circuit(RC circuit) at CS pin, and a decoupling cap at VDD pin. Apart from this we should be good.
c. w.r.t to the EMI filter design, it is currently not enabled in WEBENCH for any AC/DC designs,

I will wait for the contact who has worked on this device for point b.), till he returns from vacation this week.

But overall we should still be fine even with the simplified WEBENCH design.

One more thing, the current design is created with "Ideal FET" without a part number. This happens when voltage/current stress on FET is high and we are not able to find a FET from our inventory which satisfies either of voltage or current or thermal requirements.
However we can find a part from disty with the design requirements and use heat sinks in our final design.

Hi Sahil / Praveen,

In the TI reference designs, there's a shield "winding", especially looking at PMP9643. I think the shield winding helps reduce the capacitance between the primary and secondary, I suppose. Wonder whether adding such a setup would be helpful/detrimental to the design is my first thought.

Regarding (b) it would be great to have some feedback.

If you have a suggestion for the FET that would be great.

Hi Manu,

Currently we don’t support shield windings in WEBENCH.

Regarding point b.) you can expect the WEBENCH design to help you with your prototyping. For other system level considerations including EMI and safety/protection you will need to add additional circuits”.

Also currently due to higher MOSFET junction temperature for load current of 6.5A we are not able to find a FET from our Data Bsae which satisfies thermal requirements.

TIDA-00367 uses an IPP65R225 MOSFET

Can that be considered as an acceptable choice, or a still better option is suggested ?

Hi Manu,

We have updated the Webench design to select the below shown FET's for 6.5A case. Currently the latest code is on local server. We have our next release planned on 15 Dec 2018. You will be able to see the changes on ti.com after this release.

In the screenshot that you have posted, the IPP65R225C7 does not seem to be listed:

Comparing it with the SPP11N65C3

the IPP65R225C7 appears to have a higher rating. Is it due to some parameter that I have missed; that it is not listed in the Webench database ?

Hi Manu,

Currently we don't have IPP65R225C7 MOSFET in our data base. Also please note that IPP65R225C7 mosfet will be higher rated for current condition. This will indirectly increase the BOM cost.
The updated Webench design will select 3 different MOSFETs which will help you with your prototyping for 6.5A.

Otherwise if you still explicitly want us to add IPP65R225C7 FET in our DB. We will add it, but it will take some time.
