TIDA-01021: TSW14J57 JESD204B Shuts Down when firmware is loaded

Part Number: TIDA-01021
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC12DJ3200EVM, LMK61E2, ADC12DJ3200

In the process of synchronizing two ADC12DJ3200EVM boards and 2 TSW14J57 JESD204B under design TIDA-01021 I have run into a strange issue.

I connected to one of the TSW14J57 boards through the HSDC Pro software as normal and then tried to connect to the other TSW14J57 board on the same computer. After this did not work I noticed that one of the TSW14J57 boards (the 1st board) was malfunctioning. It had improperly powered down, all of the photodiodes were off, the fan had stopped spinning but was jittering in place.

After powering down the TSW14J57 board I was able to restart the board, and connect to it with the HSDC Pro software, however now if I try to load firmware to the board it will shut down.

I am not sure if this is a mechanical issue or a firmware issue and I need help knowing how to proceed with troubleshooting this issue.

Thanks,

  • Update: It does not appear to be a mechanical issue. I turned off the all of the other boards except for the first TSW14J57 board (TIDA-01021, both ADC12DJ3200EVMs and the second TSW14J57). Under these conditions I was able to load firmware to the board as normal without causing a shutdown. I then powered up all of the other boards with no issues. However, immediately after loading firmware onto the second TSW14J57, the first TSW14J57 shut down.

I am looking for a solution to this issue, is it possible that there is a special firmware required to operate the TSW14J57 boards in the TIDA-01021 configuration? Currently I am using firmware "ADC12DJxx00_JMODE2_trg" which loads the "TSW14J57revE_BRAM_RxOnly_16L_trig_FIRMWARE" interface.
  • J O, hello and thank you for your interest in Texas Instruments. Looks like you have two E2E threads on this topic. I'm going to connect you with the original design, however, I noted that it appears one of our engineers from our ADC team has provided you with a response with expectation that he will get back to you. Have you heard anything from him (J. Brinkhurst)? Just want to be sure to not duplicate efforts internally here with our design community.

  • The first question I was able to resolve, see my updated comment. This is a second issue that has occurred based on the same design described in the 1st question. I have not heard any response yet on the problems outlined in this thread. Hoping to hear a response soon!
  • Is there anyone who can look into this? I do not want to troubleshoot this issue myself as one of the boards fails during the process.
  • J O,

I assume, you are using the latest HSDC Pro SW (High Speed Data Converter Pro v4.90.02) for your testing.

Can you please try to connect both TSW14J57 boards in two different computers and load the FW individually?

Hope it will resolve the issue.

    Thanks!

  • I have now tested this system (as described in TIDA-01021 and in the thread that this question is related to) with two computers. Each time the data capture board connected to output 2 of the clocking and synchronization board fails . I will list my troubleshooting process in detail. Both computers are running the most recent version of HSDC Pro that I could download on the website. GUI Version 4.90, Dll version 0.1, Firmware 0.3, Patch version - no patch applied.

    Startup procedure alpha
    1. I turn on both TSW14J57 data capture boards and both ADC12DJ3200EVM boards attached to them.
    2. I turn on the clocking and synchronization board.
    3. I load the firmware onto the two boards ( "ADC12DJxx00_JMODE2_trg" which loads the "TSW14J57revE_BRAM_RxOnly_16L_trig_FIRMWARE" interface) (setting the sample rate to 2.7 GHz). Both boards accept the firmware and the lights are in sequence D1 ON, D2 OFF, D3 ON, D4 OFF, D5-D8 ON.
    4. I load the first low-level configuration file to the clocking and synchronization board (1021_LMK61E2_33.75MREF.cfg)
    5. As the configuration is set, the TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 2 of the synchronization and clocking board shuts down (not always immediately).
    6. TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 1 of the clocking and synchronization board can now capture data, after pressing the capture button on the HSDC PRO software the lights on the TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 1 move to this sequence: D1 ON, D2 OFF, D3 OFF, D4 Blinking, D5-D8 ON.

    Startup procedure Beta
    1. I turn on both TSW14J57 data capture boards and both ADC12DJ3200EVM boards attached to them.
    2. I turn on the clocking and synchronization board.
    3. I load all the configuration files to the clocking and synchronization board and the the ADC12DJ3200 EVM boards in correct sequence (described in the original question that this is linked to).
    4. I load firmware ( "ADC12DJxx00_JMODE2_trg" which loads the "TSW14J57revE_BRAM_RxOnly_16L_trig_FIRMWARE" interface) on the TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 1 of the clocking and synchronization boards (setting the sample rate to 2.7 GHz).
    5. I capture data on the TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 1 of the clocking and synchronization boards. This is successful and the diodes read D1 ON, D2 OFF, D3 OFF, D4 Blinking, D5-D8 ON.
    6. I load firmware ( "ADC12DJxx00_JMODE2_trg" which loads the "TSW14J57revE_BRAM_RxOnly_16L_trig_FIRMWARE" interface) on the TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 2 of the clocking and synchronization boards (setting the sample rate to 2.7 GHz).
    7. TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 2 of the clocking and synchronization boards immediately fails

    Startup procedure Gamma
    5. I capture data on the TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 2 of the clocking and synchronization boards. This is successful and the diodes read D1 ON, D2 OFF, D3 OFF, D4 Blinking, D5-D8 ON.
    7. TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 2 of the clocking and synchronization boards immediately fails.
    8. I capture data on the TSW14J57 capture board connected to output 1 of the clocking and synchronization boards. This is successful and the diodes read D1 ON, D2 OFF, D3 OFF, D4 Blinking, D5-D8 ON.

The difference between Beta and Gamma startup procedures are the order in which I load firmware onto the two TSW14J57 data capture boards. I can load firmware and collect data from either board individually while connected and synced with the clocking and synchronization board. However as soon as I try to load firmware onto both boards simultaneously only the TSW14J57 data capture board connected to output 2 of the clocking and synchronization board immediately fails.

I have switched the green FMC Adapter Boards and cables between the two systems with the same results.
I have also exchanged TSW14J57 data capture boards with the same results.
I have also exchanged ADC12DJ3200EVM boards with the same results.
I have also exchanged TIDA-01021 synchronization boards with the same results.

Please advise as to what may be the problem.
  • J O,

Can you please confirm on the below:

    1. After connecting the two TSW14J57 with two different computers, first TSW14J57 board shut down issue got resolved?

    2. Now, TSW14J57 capture card connected to the output 2 of the clocking board is failing. What does it mean by the failing, capture card shut down (all LEDs going off) or gives an error?

    3. Hope, initially both TSW14J57 capture cards are operated in normal capture mode. Plz confirm?

Actually, clock doesn't affect the TSW14J57 performance and this shut down / failing can be because of power supply to TSW14J57 capture card.

Can you please cross check the power supply for both TSW14J57 capture card?

    1. Provide individual +12V / 2A power supply to both TSW14J57.

    2. Measure voltage at Test point TP38 vs. GND on TSW14J57 (should be +12V)

    3. Measure current before and after loading FW on both TSW14J57.

    Thanks!
