What benefits does this “magnetically resistant” power reference design offer over other Quasi-Resonant Flyback power reference designs?
The PMP21462 is a 12-Watt, Magnetically Resistant, Quasi-Resonant Flyback Reference Design. It utilizes a transformer with iron powder core, which is resistant to magnetic forces. It also provides a soft saturation curve. However even with this type of core, introducing a strong external magnet to the core will reduce the transformer’s primary inductance. As a result the duty cycle will decrease and cause the peak currents to be higher in the power components.
To account for these effects, the PMP21462 power reference design is designed to operate normally with a higher primary inductance and lower peak currents. Additionally, it also provides margin to operate with higher peak currents if the inductance is reduced.
