TIDA-010009: 2kV Surge on J1

Genius 11160 points
Part Number: TIDA-010009

My customer has the following question:

The series resistor Rth to withstand a surge up to 2kV (according to data sheet in connection with a TVS):
Am I right in assuming that in schematics TIDA-010009_IO-Power + Protection_BIDIRE2 resistors R3, R73 and R74 would pass a 2kV surge?
At 500V per resistor, you just get to the 100W from the Vishay datasheet.

Can you confirm J1 can withstand 2kV Surge line-line ?

Thank you!TIDA-010008_IO-Power+ProtectionE2(001)_Sch.PDF

  • Hello Marc,

These are special type of resistors that withstand 1.2/50us pulse.

It also depends on the surge impedance.

With surge impedance of 42R, J1 can be tested up to 2 KV.

The design assumes testing as per standards. If the application is expecting higher transients or continuous transients, the resistors may need to be de-rated further.

    Thanks
