PMP6776: Why use TPS56121 as the supply of 3.3v rather than 1v

Part Number: PMP6776
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54620, TPS56121, , PMP

PMP6776 ues TPS56121 as the supply of 3.3v and use the TPS54620 which can provide 6A current as the supply of 1v?

Is there any disadvantage of  TPS56121 so that it is only used to power IOs rather than the Core which always comsume the most power?

  • Hi user,

Sorry, your question is not clear to me. Are you asking if the TPS56121 could be used to provide the 1V instead of the TPS54620? I have put some of my thoughts on the part selection for this PMP design below.

The TPS56121 was likely selected for the 2.5V and 3.3V because in general there is more power loss in the IC at higher output voltages with higher duty cycles. This happens because the HS FET is typically higher Rdson and with higher duty cycles the HS FET is on more so the conduction loss is higher. The TPS56121 should be more efficient than the TPS54620.

The TPS54620 was likely selected for the 1.0V to provide a smaller solution size and cost effective solution for 6A. The TPS56121 could also be used to provide but would likely result in a bigger solution.
