WEBENCH® Tools/PMP20588: Ethernet (PoE) LED's

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are using PMP20588 PoE, in that we need to Turn ON the RJ45 LAN connector LED's in according to PD detection and Data.

In that provision is there for PD detection,solution needed for data.

Please provide the Solution for this.

Hi Gangadhar,

Unfortunately turning on an LED during detection is not typically done in any PoE end equipment. This is because detection negotiation can be easily corrupted with any small amount of current.

Majority of designs will use the RJ45 LEDs to show that power has been allocated (48V is up), if there is fault (this is done by the microcontroller controlling the PSE reading the fault register and turning a FET ON/OFF to blink the RJ45 LED), and ethernet data is being sent (microcontroller would turn a FET ON/OFF to blink the RJ45 LED while its sending data).

Hi Darwin,

Can we implement this functionality (blink the RJ45 LED while its sending data ) in PMP20588. if yes, Please suggest me the changes in the design.

If not, Please suggest me the suitable Circuit.

Hi Gangadhar,

The PMP20588 is a power reference design where we focus on the design for powering the PSE. I believe you are looking for circuits on the data side so this reference wouldn't show this and is more of a system level (end equipment) design. I recommended posting in the forum for the microcontroller you are using that is sending and receiving the ethernet data.

In this design for driving the LED's we need Regulator with a current rating of (Max) 250mA.

Please suggest the Part Number.

Can we use the Realtek Gigabit Ethernet Interface Controller for driving the LED's in (RJ-45) PoE.

Hi Gangadhar,

Unfortunately, I am only familiar with our PoE products. I am not familiar with the Realtek solutions. For the LED drivers, I recommend posting in the LED driver forum as they would be able to recommend the latest TI product. You might also be able to use an LDO if your input voltage to regulate the 3.3V is low enough (like a 5V or 12V input).
