TIDA-060025: Lidar amplifier design followup question-power

Part Number: TIDA-060025
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7201, TLV3501,

(This is a follow on question to the one I posted under "Amplifier design for lidar")

My team is designing a lidar using the reference design but with our own laser diode and transmitting optics as well as a detector/transimpedance amplifier combo.

Our proposed setup:  Thorlabs PDA100A2 detector---> TLV3501 comparator--->TDC7201 evaluation board (connected to MSP430 launchpad)

We are planning on making a small custom PCB for the comparator with SMA connections to the detector and eval board but need to figure out the best way to power it (supply voltage and also the reference voltage of 25 mV).  Is there a straightforward way to do this from the 7201 evaluation board (or launchpad?) or do we need another external voltage supply?

Thanks again!

Sara

  • Hello again Sara,

I would highly suggest downloading the design files located midway through the TIDA-060025 page, and using these files to make the necessary modifications to the PCB in order to fit your application. Or if there are a lot of modifications to be made, since you are excluding some of the parts, you could try to reference the design files. My intent is to make it known that is available to the public, and can be utilized. From the reference design, the USB power is used for the MSP430 LaunchPad and the TDC7201. The rest of the board from the reference design is powered by a 5-V wall pluggable power supply. This same setup could be used for your application. The rest of the board in your case would just be the comparator; since, the Thorlabs detector seems to have its own external power requirements. Depending on how your application will be setup mechanically, you could have test points on the pcb board connected by trace to the voltage supplies. Let me know if you need more clarification if the above is too vague.

    Thank you!

  • Hello Sara,

    Any updates on this?

  • Hi,

We are still working on a design but are probably going to go with a custom pcb using the design files.  Thanks.
