TIDA-00332: TIDA-00332 Altium Reference Design wrong?

Part Number: TIDA-00332

Hi there,

found several failures within the reference design found here in Altium http://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00332#descriptionArea

Components have other values then shown in the schematic. Other values then in the Simulation and in SBOA295.

And honestly I`m not sure also if besides the caps and resistors also the Z-Diode is wrong?

BR,

Markus

  • Hello Markus,

Thanks for considering to use Texas Instruments.  So if I interpret your statements correctly, you downloaded the gerbers then replaced the components we recommend with different components, fabricated and assembled the board, and now you are seeing different results than what we have shown in our reference design.  If so, can you tell me what parts were used instead?  I will need the manufacturer part numbers to determine whether you exceeded their recommended operating conditions.  If I misunderstood what you mean, please elaborate more so I can better understand why you may be seeing failures.

  • Hi Patrick,

firstly I realized it in the ALTIUM schematic. The values shown in the schematic are not matching with the component itself. e.g. R3, C1, C2, R2...

Also in the document TIDU833- March 2015 on page 14 there is e.g. R1 in the BOM in reality 1R (mouser) but Needs to be a 200kR. Also C1, C2 regarding to the schematic on page 14 is should be 100nF but in the BOM there is a 10pF.

    So quite confusing at all.

Also cause there is a 2nd newer document SBOA295–June 2018 with different values.

  • Hello Markus,

Thanks for clarifying, I now understand your issue.  I too see that parts BOM parts do not quite match what is in the schematic or what is in the altium file.  I suspect the person who did the layout back in 2014 was lazy and just tried to use readily available parts with the same footprint in the altium library, they then hid this by adding or editing labels in the schematic.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  I will look at correcting any errors in the BOM and send you the revised version. I will also try to get our online document and altium files revised.

  • Hello Markus,

I looked through the BOM and revised some of the parts to get the table posted below.  I have not built and verified this on the bench as that could take several days before I can get to it, but I think the parts I have below will work.  All of these except the DEM Manufacturing parts can be found on digikey.  The banana jacks can be found on mouser and appear to be made by Deltron now.  As for the 49.9k resistor I noticed that typically is not supplied, so I provided an alternative part number for that.  The parts I chose do not have a minimum purchase quantity required.  If you plan on building alot of these for a product, you might consider others that give you discount when buying in bulk.

  • Hello Markus,

I have entered this into our log of collateral items that needs to be updated.  We will be taking actions to get the documents updated.  However, as there a multiply layers of quality control for that, it could take some time.  As for now, I think the parts I have recommended above should be adequate for this design.  As such I am going to close this thread.  However, if you continue to have issues with implementing the TIDA-00332 design, please reply below and I will be happy to further assist you.

  • Hi Patrick,

    any updates so far?

    Thanks,
    Markus

  • Hello Markus,

So far it has not moved forward.  I need to get our pcb modeling team to add the relevant parts to the part library in our pcb layout program, build the board with the parts I recommended above, validate the results, and then go through the process of updating the document which requires authorization and approval from multiple people. I will try to get the board build in my queue for next week.
