WEBENCH® Tools/SN65HVD230: SN65HVD230 signal line capacitance selection

Part Number: SN65HVD230

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

I was using SN65HVD230DR and found that there is no description of C7, C8, C9 in the data manual, and I have not found the corresponding description after consulting some materials. How to choose these capacitor values? Please recommend some values for reference.

  • User,

These capacitors are meant for CAN bus signal filtering, and can vary depending on the application.

For C7, the range of capacitance to be used will need to be 4.7nF to 100nF. This capacitor is meant to work the resistors R7 and R8 in the split termination configuration be low-pass filters for both CANH and CANL.

C8 and C9 are additional filtering that can be placed directly on the CANH and CANL pins to ground. These can range in value from 10pF all the way to 150pF, and the biggest deciding factor is how many nodes with be on the bus. If you have many nodes (10+), you'll want to go with a lower capacitance as to not load down the CAN bus signals when the transceiver is driving a dominant.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,
