TIDA-01599: Load switches

Genius 4780 points
Part Number: TIDA-01599
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS27S100, TPS22860

Please let us know about Load switches.

24V :TPS27S100  (Figure8) ...       devided Vout to Monitor_2

3.3V:TPS22860 (Figure9) ...           Vout to Monitor_1

Diagnostic function of both rails is to monitor only Vout.

Please let us know what is difference between using MOSFET and Load switch.

And Please let us know why TPS27S100 /FLT pin is not used in this block.

  • Hi Kura,

It looks like the designers of this board wanted to have a system by which the workings of TPS27S100 and TPS22860 were periodically checked while the system was in use.

Monitor_2 and Monitor_1 are nodes that will drop voltage when the load switches are turned off momentarily but the gate driver will not be affected as it is held high by a capacitor and any backflow is blocked by the diode. I think this is done to check that the device is still working and responding to the the inputs and a short across the device has not occurred.

In this TIDA board, the B version of the TPS27S100 is used. This version does not have a FLT pin.

The difference between a MOSFET and Load Switch or High Side Switch is many. Load Switches and High Side Switches are integrated devices that contain the power FET, the driver circuitry and many protection features in one device. Benefits of using a load switch or high side switch over regular MOSFETs are many. These include better space management, linear slew rate control, protection features like current limiting, etc. Please refer to this document to learn more about using Power Switches to protect your power path:  https://www.ti.com/lit/eb/slyy168/slyy168.pdf
