8-channel ADC options for seismic applications.

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS1278, ADS1284

Hello everyone,

I've been looking for 8-channel ADC options for seismic applications and I saw that the ADS1278 is advisable for these purposes. However, it seems that the ADS1278 doesn't have a Slave Selection pin for its SPI. I need an option that contains it because I need to read 24 channels. I was thinking of using three ADS1278 in the same SPI to do so.

Can anyone please suggest options available from TI that can meet my needs?

Thank you in advance!

  • Hello Hiago,

The ADS1278 supports daisy-chain mode, allowing 24 channels on a single SPI bus.  This limits the maximum data rate of each ADC because of maximum SCLK limitations.

Table 15 in the ADS1278 datasheet shows the maximum number of channels that can be used in daisy-chain for different configurations.  For 24 channels, you will need to use low-speed mode, which has a maximum output data rate of 10.5ksps per channel.

We also have ADC's that are optimized specifically for seismic; ADS1284 is one such example.  It has a multiplexor and can support up to two channels, but is a single ADC core.  Although it is a single ADC core, it includes a PGA which reduces solution size.
