MSP-FET: MSP-FET connected to external power on the wrong pin and is now damaged.

Part Number: MSP-FET

MSP-FET Emulator (https://www.digikey.co.uk/product-detail/en/texas-instruments/MSP-FET/296-37897-ND/4914406)

I accidentally connected an external power source (24V) to my target device while the MSP-FET device was also connected to Pin 2 (VCC Tool). I forgot to switch it to Pin 4 (VCC Target). This seems to have damaged the MSP-FET debugger and the device is no longer recognized in my IAR IDE.

User Guide: (Page 21 - shows the switch that needs to be added which i have in my setup but forgot to switch to correct pin)

I have already ordered replacement devices but I would like to know if there is any way to salvage this device? (we have another 3 devices that have suffered the same accident over the years and it would be a shame to dump them all if there was a way to bring them back to life)

Also is there any recommendation you have for adding some protection to my circuit/setup to prevent this accident from happening again? I was thinking to add a diode to pin 2 (VCC tool) to try and protect it but maybe you have a better recommendation.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

  • Hello Alkiviadis,

Unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done to salvage those units.  No telling which components got permanently damaged or stressed (could fail later).  Donate them to your local electronic recycling center.

Not sure what all your circuits do, but maybe a 3.6v zener on VDD to help clamp the voltage.
